I'm supporting children and young people with disabilities in North Yorkshire

Ryedale Special Families is an independent charity based in Malton. Founded in the 1990s by a small group of parents with disabled children, it’s grown significantly over the past 25 years, and today, provides care and support for more than 400 families throughout the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire.

Providing a wide range of services including information, advocacy, flexible one-to-one care, social groups and family activities, it offers a vital support network to help families and young people with all kinds of disabilities. The charity depends heavily on fundraising to finance the work it does, and the Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge is an important part of this picture. The loss of income from the cancellation of this year's Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge is a devastating blow to the charity and the families it supports and money raised from this Virtual 2020 event will make a huge difference to them.

Halfway

Tuesday 21st Jul
Hit the halfway point with my longest ride yet, 12.7 miles from the top of Chimney Bank, along the Rosedale Railway, up past Blakey pub to the Rosedale turn off and then back again. Wow it's windy up there !

Setting targets...

Monday 13th Jul
Mission ?- 10 miles in an hour.
Accomplished ?-  almost but no cigar, even though my thighs are telling me we did. So I have a target now, haha, or actually another more personal target. Quick 10 miles tonight, in 1 hr 19 mins, be nice to get that down to an hour before I'm done.
Thanks all for the continued support.

Knott Road

Sunday 12th Jul
Just a "quick" little 8 miles today. I say quick but hopefully nobody's timing me. My new bike seat arrived, wide bottoms need wide seats apparently, who knew! Suffice to say, it was a little bit more...hmm I'll rephrase, I was going to say more comfortable, I'll say less painful instead...and also , while I'm here, another HUGE thankyou, my sponsor amount keeps rising steadily and it's such a huge incentive to keep pushing and peddling. Am truly overwhelmed and so very grateful for all the support. xxx

longest ride yet

Friday 10th Jul
There have been a lot of wonderful inventions over the years but today I would give a medal to whoever invented gel seats. I did my longest ride yet, 11.2 miles around Rosedale Chimneys. it wasn't the fastest time but am taking a tortoises outlook. I might also shave my legs, am sure that will help no end with the aerodynamics ! Right, I'm going in the bath......I may be some time.

...and we're off

Wednesday 8th Jul
or rather, I'm off but delighted that one of daughters has decided to do some of the ride with me. Just a short one tonight but progress is progress no matter how slow. rain was quite heavy and we faced a wind on the way have found a great track well away from the road so I think this is where I'll do most of my 144 miles. 6 down 138 to go !

i like to ride my bicycle, but prefer when others peddle.

Wednesday 24th Jun
It's quite apt that I'm doing a bike ride as it's probably Emersons favourite day out with the guys from RSF. They have taught to him how to choose his activity through the use of photographs and if the bike photo is there he picks it every time. It's certainly a good work out for them as he doesn't like to peddle too much, instead he will leisurely sit back and trail his hand through the grass whilst being driven, given how challenging I found biking after my first couple of rides I think he may have the right idea !

My little man

Thursday 18th Jun
Emerson was diagnosed with autism at the age of 2. Now a strapping 14yr old he enjoys weekly trips out with 2 support workers from RSF and not only does he get to visit places that would be impossible for us to access with him on our own it also gives his 3 sisters some respite from what is sometimes a very difficult home life. They get their parents to themselves for a few precious hours.
We have accessed RSF for over 8 years now and without their help and support life would have been, and indeed was, very different.
With their help I've been able to dedicate time to starting my own business.
Now, it's not a good time to ask people for money at the moment, my own business has literally stopped over night due to the pandemic. It's also not a good time for me to do physical exercise because , to be frank, I hate it. Anyone who knows me is well aware if I can take the car, I will.
So I'm biking 144 miles in July to help with some much needed funding to keep this charity running as they themselves like everyone else are feeling the pinch. I know how much we and other families rely on RSF, they're our lifeline.
